In an unprecedented and a move that astounded many, the Supreme Court of India removed Anurag Thakur and Ajay Shirke (the president and secretary of the BCCI respectively) from their positions in BCCI. This came after BCCI had not implemented many of the recommendations of the Lodha Committee appointed by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court gave an order to implement these on July 18, and the failure to do so resulted in the top brass of the BCCI being ousted.
According to the Supreme Court, the BCCI & State association office bearers who failed to meet the criteria set by the committee shall cease holding office. The committee had recommended earlier that an officer should be an Indian citizen, not be older than 70 years, not a government servant or minister and should not have held office with BCCI or state association for more than 9 years. He should not hold office in another sports body, shouldn’t have a criminal record or be insolvent or of unsound mind.
Will this instability affect the performance of the Indian Cricket Team? That remains to be seen.
