Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his 3 day visit to the United States of America with an address to the US Congress. Several Prime Ministers before him have addressed the US Congress, but this is the first Prime Minister since Rajiv Gandhi who has a simple majority in the Lok Sabha. The speech was well received by the lawmakers in the Congress who greeted it with rapturous applause and multiple standing ovations. Considering the impressive foreign policy initiatives embarked by the Modi government this speech assumes more significance than ever before. This comes on heels of a successful bilateral talk between him and the President of the United States, Barack Obama. (https://www.myind.net/india-us-joint-statement-during-narendra-modis-us-visit )
Laced with humor and personal anecdotes, the speech marked the voice of emergent, confident India ready to assume its place on global stage. Declaring that India-US has overcome hesitations of history, Prime Minister Modi paid rich tributes to freedom, equality and democracy which are the guiding principles of both democracies. Prime Minister Modi laid out the vision for economically developed India and empowering Indian youth with skills to take on the world. Reinforcing that terror is the biggest threat facing India today he warned against rewarding those who reward regimes that harbor terror. Modi spoke about India’s role in rebuilding Afghanistan and assuming responsibility to secure Indian Ocean Region.
Prime Minister Modi ended the speech by quoting great American poet, Walt Whitman and added ‘there is a new symphony in play’, thus brilliantly summing up the new momentum in India-US relationship. Here is video of the speech:
