In an unconventional but not unprecedented decision, the Indian government appointed vice chief of army staff Lt Gen Bipin Rawat as the new Army chief. He superseded two seniors who were in the reckoning for the post. The two seniors in line whom Gen Rawat superseded were Lt Gen Praveen Bakshi, who headed the Eastern Command and Chief of the Southern Command P M Hariz. This is not a new phenomenon and Indira Gandhi did the same thing in 1983.
Although this has generated some controversy from certain quarters, it is being seen as Government appointing officers with a Kashmir centric focus.
Apart from the government has also appointed Air Marshal BS Dhanoa as the new IAF chief. Both the officers will take charge on December 31st.
The government also appointed Rajiv Jain as the chief of Intelligence Bureau and Anil Dhasmana as the chief of R&AW.
