Perhaps it shouldn’t have come as a surprise, but it did. In a dramatic press conference. Ram Madhav announced an end to BJP-PDP alliance in Jammu and Kashmir calling it untenable. Earlier BJP Ministers were summoned to Delhi and speculations were rife on BJP finally ending the alliance.
In 2015 alliance had come about between BJP and PDP led by Mufti Mohammad Syed because of the way State had voted. BJP had swept Jammu and PDP emerged as single largest party in the valley. Despite bitterly opposed ideologically the two parties came together to form a government after much deliberation and elaborate document that was drafted to guide the government.
The alliance hit major roadblock when Mufti Syed suddenly passed away a year into the alliance. After that it has been consistent downhill. Mehbooba Mufti saw the law and order slipping from her hands. After Burhan Wani’s encounter killing, violent incidents increased and South Kashmir literally resembled a war zone.
The differences between BJP and PDP kept growing and after Kathua rape incident the relations seemed beyond repair. It was a matter of time now to see who pulls the rug on whom. Eventually it was the BJP that pulled the trigger and brought down the government. Mehbooba Mufti immediately submitted her resignation and indicated that she was not looking for any possibility of alliance with anybody else.
Ultimately what acted as last nail in the coffin was Journalist and Editor Shujaat Bukhari’s killing. It was widely believed that after participating in Track 2 meets he was actively lobbying for dialogue between various stake holders. A day before Eid he was shot dead brutally outside his office sending shock waves across the state. It seems BJP saw the state slipping out of its hands after having lost all goodwill in Jammu, decided to pull the plug.
