Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to the concerns expressed by over 600 lawyers regarding a "vested interest group" attempting to exert pressure on the judiciary and tarnish the reputation of the courts. He remarked, "Using intimidation tactics to coerce others is reminiscent of the traditional Congress culture."
In response to the letter penned by the lawyers to the Chief Justice of India, PM Modi remarked that five decades ago, the same group had advocated for a "committed judiciary." He criticised their demand for commitment from others for their personal gain while failing to show commitment towards the nation. He added, "It is unsurprising that 1.4 billion Indians are rejecting them."
Chief Justice of India received a letter from over 600 lawyers, including senior advocate Harish Salve and Bar Council chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra, accusing a "vested interest group" of attempting to exert pressure on the judiciary and tarnish the reputation of courts, particularly in cases involving political corruption.
In their letter, the lawyers stated that the interest group fabricates false narratives of an alleged superior past and golden era of courts, juxtaposing it with current events. They asserted that their remarks are intended to sway courts and publicly shame them for political advantages.
Official sources shared the letter, which accused a specific group of lawyers, albeit without naming them, of defending politicians during the day and subsequently attempting to sway judges through media influence at night.
Lawyers from various parts of the country have expressed concerns over the damaging effects of certain tactics on the courts and the democratic framework. They attributed these tactics to a specific group, accusing them of concocting the theory of "bench fixing". According to the lawyers, such actions are not only disrespectful and contemptuous but also constitute an assault on the honour and integrity of the courts.
The lawyers further criticised the group for comparing Indian judicial institutions to those in countries lacking the rule of law, alleging unfair practices. They emphasised that these criticisms are not merely critiques but direct assaults aimed at undermining public trust in the judiciary and jeopardising the impartial application of laws.
The lawyers highlighted the significance of CJI Chandrachud's leadership during these challenging times and called for the Supreme Court to remain steadfast. They stressed that it is not the time for maintaining a dignified silence.
