Pro-Palestinian activists have issued a list of 18 demands to the leader of Britain’s opposition Labour Party, stating they will withhold their support in the upcoming general election unless he complies with their requests.
The Muslim Vote, a campaign aiming to garner support from Muslim voters for pro-Palestine candidates, has urged Sir Keir Starmer to promise the cutting of military ties with Israel, the implementation of a travel ban on Israeli politicians involved in the Gaza conflict, and the imposition of sanctions on companies operating in occupied territories.
According to The Telegraph, the group has informed Starmer that he must commit to "real action" and fulfil their requests if he is genuinely "serious" about his pledge to rebuild trust with those dissatisfied with his stance on the Gaza conflict.
According to the supporters, they would opt for the Green Party or Liberal Democrats if their demands were not met.
Labour's campaign chief, Pat McFadden, admitted that Starmer's handling of the conflict had resulted in the party losing votes in the recent local elections. Labour experienced a significant decline in support in areas with large Muslim populations, such as Oldham in Greater Manchester, where the party suffered a surprising defeat, losing overall control of the council.
Following the outcome, Starmer expressed determination to regain the trust of those who withdrew their support for Labour due to his position on the Gaza conflict. However, he refrained from making any specific commitments on the issue.
The Muslim Vote issued a challenge to Starmer, urging him to commit to and implement the 18 demands if he assumes the role of the next prime minister.
These demands entail actions such as removing the extremism definition introduced by Secretary of State for Leveling Up, Housing and Communities Michael Gove and issuing guidance permitting Muslims to pray at school.
