Iran announced sanctions on several American and British individuals and entities for their support of Israel in its conflict with the Palestinian group Hamas.
The Islamic Republic, a longstanding regional adversary of Israel, revealed the punitive actions through an announcement from its foreign ministry. The statement outlined that the sanctions were directed at seven American individuals, among them General Bryan P. Fenton, who serves as the commander of the US Special Operations Command, and Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, a former commander of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet.
British officials and entities singled out for sanctions include Secretary of State for Defence Grant Shapps, Commander of the British Army Strategic Command James Hockenhull, and the UK Royal Navy presence in the Red Sea.
Sanctions were also announced against US firms Lockheed Martin and Chevron and British counterparts Elbit Systems, Parker Meggitt, and Rafael UK.
This comes after the UK, US, and Canada imposed fresh sanctions on Iran following its attack on Israel earlier this month.
According to a statement by the Foreign Ministry on Thursday, the blacklisted individuals and entities have also helped the Israeli regime in its acts against regional and international peace. "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in conformity with the "Law on Countering the Violation of Human Rights and Adventurous and Terrorist Activities of the United States in the Region" (2017), particularly, Articles 4 and 5, identifies and imposes sanctions as set forth in the abovementioned Act on the following persons and institutions in connection with their support and financing of the Zionist regime of Israel's terrorist acts, glorification and supporting terrorism and gross violations of human rights against the Palestinian people, and in particular, the people of the Gaza strip," Ministry said in a statement, IRNA reported.
Tehran additionally imposed sanctions on seven American individuals for purportedly backing Israel in its actions against the Palestinians, particularly in the Gaza Strip.
Following the Iranian Foreign Ministry orders "all relevant national institutions of the Islamic Republic of Iran, consistent with the regulations adopted by the related authorities, will take appropriate measures, which are blocking of accounts and transactions in the Iranian financial and banking systems, blocking of assets within the jurisdiction of the Islamic Republic of Iran as well as prohibition of visa issuance and entry to the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, for effective implementation of the above-mentioned sanctions."
Iran's tensions with the West heightened following an unprecedented assault on Israel allegedly in retaliation for an attack on its consulate in Syria.
On April 26, the United States imposed sanctions on more than a dozen entities, eight individuals, and vessels for their involvement in facilitating illicit trade and the transfer of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on behalf of the Iranian military.
The conflict in the Gaza Strip erupted following an attack by Palestinian Hamas operatives on Israel on October 7, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,170 people, primarily civilians, according to a tally by AFP based on official Israeli figures.
Iran backs Hamas but has denied any direct involvement in the attack.
Israel's retaliatory offensive against Hamas has since killed at least 34,568 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry.
