Indian coast guard detains Iranian fishing vessel over crew exploitation allegations

The Indian Coast Guard conducted a rapid and coordinated sea-air operation, intercepting and detaining an Iranian fishing vessel in the Arabian Sea near the coast of Kerala.
The vessel, which had six Indian crew members employed under contract in Iran, was apprehended due to allegations of exploitation and mistreatment by the owner.
Upon receiving reports of mistreatment, the India Coast Guard (ICG) took swift action, demonstrating a strong commitment to maritime security and crew welfare. The vessel was promptly brought to Kochi for further investigation to verify the allegations and implement appropriate measures.
This interception underscores the importance of maintaining maritime security and safeguarding the rights and welfare of crew members in international waters.
The India Coast Guard demonstrated its commitment to enforcing maritime laws and regulations and ensuring the safety of seafarers through decisive action.
According to a statement from the India Coast Guard, they conducted a swift sea-air coordinated operation to intercept and detain an Iranian fishing vessel in the Arabian Sea, located west of the Kerala coast.
The vessel was carrying six Indian crew members who were employed on a contractual basis in Iran and alleged exploitation and mistreatment by the boat owner. Following the interception, the vessel was brought to Kochi for further investigation.
The India Coast Guard emphasised its dedication to upholding maritime security and welfare in a post on X.
Authorities have refrained from disclosing further details regarding the nature of the alleged exploitation or the conditions on board the detained vessel.
Earlier, on May 1, India Coast Guard Ship C-153 swiftly responded by conducting a Medical Evacuation of a 40-year-old fisherman from IFB Francis II who had sustained a head injury.
The operation took place at 1805 hrs on May 1, positioned 70 nautical miles south of Veraval. Following the evacuation, the ICG Ship provided first aid and safely transported the fisherman to Veraval.
On April 29, in consecutive anti-narcotics operations, India Coast Guard Ship, jointly with ATS Gujarat, apprehended a fishing boat with 173 kilograms of narcotics and two perpetrators at sea. This operation followed the seizure of a Pakistani fishing boat on April 28.
