India has delivered the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines, in accordance with a USD 375 million deal signed between the two countries in 2022.
According to defence sources, the Indian Air Force dispatched its American-origin C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft carrying the missiles to the Philippines for delivery to the Philippines' Marine Corps.
The export of ground systems for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system, along with the missiles, commenced last month itself, they added.
Amid escalating tensions with China due to frequent clashes in the South China Sea, the Philippines is receiving the missile systems. The Philippines plans to deploy the three batteries of the BrahMos missile system in their coastal areas to defend against potential threats in the region.
The deal has received approval from multiple partner nations involved in the programme. The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, developed as a joint venture between the DRDO and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya, is considered one of the most successful missile programs globally. Regarded as a leading precision-guided weapon, BRAHMOS has significantly bolstered India's deterrence capabilities.
Since 2007, the Indian Army has incorporated several BrahMos regiments into its arsenal.
