In a collaborative effort, Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra and Deputy Ambassador of Norway Martine Aamdal Bottheim signed documents for the 4th phase of the Norway India Partnership Initiative (NIPI). This initiative aims to extend cooperation in various health schemes.
Since its inception in 2006, the initiative has provided support to various Indian states, including Odisha, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, to enhance facilities for maternal and child healthcare.
The Norway India Partnership Initiative (NIPI) Phase 3, a health initiative between the Government of India and the Government of Norway, expands upon the experiences gained from NIPI 1 & 2. It concentrates on areas concerning Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health.
Aligned with the development goals of the Government of India as outlined in its National Health Policy (NHP) 2017, the Norway India Partnership Initiative (NIPI) Phase 3 is providing catalytic, strategic, and technical support to the National Health Mission (NHM).
This support aims to scale up demonstrated best practices in aspirational districts, strengthen innovation development capacities in the public health system, and document and disseminate NHM and NIPI interventions in five NIPI-supported states and one union territory.
The collaboration will persist in innovating, enhancing, and expanding the quality continuum of care interventions at both community and facility levels. It will also effectively contribute to realizing the goals outlined in the Indian Government's National Health Policy (NHPs).
Established in 2006 through an agreement between the Governments of Norway and India, the Norway-India Partnership Initiative (NIPI) is dedicated to making sustainable efforts to reduce Maternal, Newborn, and Child Mortality in India.
NIPI aims to offer strategic, catalytic, and innovative support to India's National Health Mission (NHM) by testing scalable interventions in four high-focus states: Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, along with the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The success of the first two phases of NIPI (2006-17) garnered recognition from both the Governments of India and Norway, who acknowledged the effective and positive outcomes of NIPI and expressed the need to extend this partnership. Consequently, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Phase 3 was signed between the Governments.
Phase 3 of the initiative builds upon the experiences gained during Phase 1 and Phase 2. It aims to expand its reach to aspirational districts and establish an innovation hub. The initiative will also focus on sharing the best practices in maternal and newborn child health, implemented under the National Health Mission and NIPI, for global dissemination and learning.
