The Indian Air Force (IAF) marked a notable achievement as it accomplished the first-ever landing of an aircraft using night vision goggles (NVG) at an advanced landing ground in the Eastern sector. The IAF's official account confirmed the milestone, announcing that an "IAF C-130J aircraft conducted a successful Night Vision Goggles aided landing at an Advanced Landing Ground in the Eastern sector."
The Eastern sector of India encompasses northeastern states such as parts of Odisha, Jharkhand, Sikkim, West Bengal, and Bihar. It also oversees the protection of a 6300 km long international border with China, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Bangladesh.
The use of NVG technology enables the IAF to conduct safer and more effective operations in low-light conditions. This advancement significantly enhances the IAF's ability to effectively undertake and conclude night-time missions, thereby bolstering the country's defense capabilities.
The IAF uploaded two clips showcasing the successful landing operation. One video depicted the aircraft's smooth landing through NVG, while the other clip provided a view from inside the aircraft window, both displayed in green, typical of NVG visuals.
This achievement is part of the IAF's ongoing efforts to continuously improve its skills and "safeguard nation's sovereignty by enhancing operational reach and defense preparedness," as stated on their official account. They further
Earlier this year, the IAF accomplished a night landing with the same aircraft (C130-J) at the Kargil airstrip, marking the first such instance. Situated near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Ladakh region, this airstrip served as the location for the successful landing.
During the 1962 Sino-Indian war, the IAF's 43 Squadron operated An-12s in Kargil, Leh, and Thoise in Ladakh, underscoring the strategic significance of the region.
