A Delhi court has ordered the framing of charges against Brij Bhushan Singh, the former president of the Wrestling Federation of India, in a sexual harassment case involving female wrestlers. The BJP leader faces charges of sexual harassment and outraging the modesty of women.
The conclusion of this prolonged case follows two instances in 2023 where wrestlers protested against Brij Bhushan Singh on the streets. On June 15, the Delhi Police filed a chargesheet against Brij Bhushan Singh under sections 354, 354 (A), and 354 (D) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Despite these serious allegations, Brij Bhushan did not secure a BJP ticket from his Kaiserganj constituency, while his son Karan Bhushan Singh was nominated instead.
Based on complaints from six wrestlers, the Delhi Police chargesheet asserted that Brij Bhushan was "liable to be prosecuted and punished for offences of sexual harassment, molestation, and stalking." Witnesses cited in the chargesheet reported witnessing the "physically wrong gesture" of the former WFI president.
The wrestlers' case involved the registration of two FIRs against Brij Bhushan based on their complaints. One FIR was lodged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and a cancellation report has been filed regarding the case of a minor wrestler.
According to Delhi Police officials, in the FIR filed by the wrestlers, "following the completion of the investigation, we are submitting a chargesheet for offences under sections 354, 354A, 354D of the IPC against accused Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, and for offences under sections 109, 354, 354A, and 506 of the IPC against accused Vinod Tomar before the Rouse Avenue Court."
