According to reports, a tragic incident took place at the inter-state border area between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh on World Environment Day, resulting in two deaths and three individuals going missing. The unfortunate event occurred during a plantation drive organized by locals.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Ranjan Bhuyan confirmed that a group of seven villagers had gone ahead to make preparations in the morning when they allegedly came under gunfire. Tragically, one person lost their life on the spot, while three others sustained bullet injuries and were promptly taken to Dhemaji Civil Hospital by local residents. Unfortunately, one of the injured individuals succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
The authorities are currently searching for the three individuals who went missing. SP Ranjan Bhuyan assured that the incident is being actively investigated by the police, who promptly arrived at the scene upon receiving the information.
Local residents have raised allegations of the involvement of miscreants from Arunachal Pradesh, as there has been an ongoing dispute over the inter-state boundary in the area.
The border between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh stretches for 804 kilometers, and discussions have been taking place between both sides to resolve the long-standing boundary disputes. An important milestone in this regard was the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on April 20 in New Delhi, between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu. The MoU was signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Last year, the two chief ministers signed the Namsai Declaration, initiating efforts to find a resolution to the boundary disputes. Arunachal Pradesh, which became a Union Territory in 1972, claims that certain forested tracts in the plains, which traditionally belonged to hill tribal chiefs and communities, were unilaterally transferred to Assam. Since Arunachal Pradesh achieved statehood in 1987, the matter has been under consideration in the Supreme Court following a dispute between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh regarding the transfer of specific territories
