The Enforcement Directorate has accused Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of intentionally consuming mangoes, sweets, and sugar with tea, purportedly aiming to raise his blood sugar levels.
A Delhi court was considering an application filed by Kejriwal requesting continuous monitoring of his sugar levels and permission to consult his doctor. The application highlighted Kejriwal's fluctuating blood sugar levels, emphasising the necessity of consulting his regular doctor. Kejriwal stated that he requires video conference consultations with his doctor three times a week.
Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Zoheb Hossain opposed the plea, stating that the individual claiming to have high diabetes regularly consumes mangoes, sweets, and tea with sugar. He argued that these actions form the basis for seeking bail.
Hossain argued that Kejriwal's purported deliberate consumption aimed to provide grounds for seeking bail, citing fluctuations in his blood sugar levels as evidence.
Advocate Vivek Jain, representing Kejriwal, objected to the agency's submission, stating that the counsel for the ED was making statements for media consumption rather than presenting substantive arguments. Jain informed the court that Kejriwal was withdrawing the application and would file a revised one.
In response, the court requested a medical report from jail authorities regarding Kejriwal's diet and scheduled the matter for further consideration.
Arvind Kejriwal remains in judicial custody at Tihar jail after being arrested by the ED in connection with a money laundering case linked to the now-defunct excise policy. The trial court has extended his judicial custody until April 23, 2024.
Kejriwal has lodged an appeal with the Supreme Court challenging a Delhi High Court ruling that dismissed his plea contesting his arrest by the ED and subsequent remand in the excise policy case.
A PIL has been filed in the Delhi High Court, requesting the Director General of Prisons to facilitate effective governance in Delhi by enabling Arvind Kejriwal to conduct meetings with assembly members and cabinet ministers via video conferencing.
The plea also calls for the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to be instructed to prevent the media from broadcasting purportedly misleading and sensational headlines regarding the imposition of the President's rule in Delhi.
