DRDO transfers nine defence technology projects to IIT-Bhubaneswar

During a collaborative meeting, IIT-Bhubaneswar received nine projects sanctioned from the electronics and communication systems (ECS) cluster of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Seven additional projects, amounting to Rs 18 crore in funding, are currently undergoing sanctioning from the ECS cluster. These projects, once sanctioned, will be undertaken by IIT-Bhubaneswar, focusing on areas such as electronics warfare, AI-driven surveillance, power systems, and radar systems.
Head of the Electrical Science School at IIT-Bhubaneswar, SR Samantaray, highlighted the significance of the collaboration between the institution and DRDO, emphasising its contribution to meeting the evolving research and development requirements of defence applications. He noted this collaboration aligns with the national agenda of 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat' and strengthens the ecosystem for nation-building.
Director General of ECS, Binay K Das, emphasised DRDO's shift from being technology followers to leaders, aiming to set benchmarks for the Indian Armed Forces and global counterparts. He underscored the importance of the collaboration and the potential establishment of a Centre of Excellence at IIT-Bhubaneswar.
He further urged researchers and faculty members involved in various DRDO-sanctioned projects to work systematically, implementing proper review and risk management systems to ensure timely completion and innovative solutions.
Regarding the collaboration with DRDO, Shreepad Karmalkar, the director of IIT-Bhubaneswar, noted that IITs nationwide have progressed from merely generating and disseminating knowledge to applying it, generating wealth through startups, entrepreneurship, and producing high-quality teachers.
Karmalkar highlighted the significance of collaborations with DRDO for research in defence mechanisms and technology, stating that they will chart a new path towards excellence. He underscored the role of research scholars in generating innovative ideas.
DRDO officials have announced their intention to engage in collaborations with academia and industry to advance projects to the application stage. These partnerships with academic institutions are aimed at fostering the development of cutting-edge technologies with the goal of aligning India with international standards in defence technology.
