An official in Dehradun has confirmed the launch of an investigation into a fabricated video involving Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The video is being circulated on social media with the alleged intent to incite animosity between communities and influence the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
Upon discovery of the video, the SSP alerted the district's social media monitoring and cyber cell teams to identify and take action against the operator of the Urban Pahadi account.
During preliminary investigations, the Cyber Cell Dehradun determined that the misleading content had spread widely, prompting Inspector Manoj Mainwal, the Cyber Cell's in-charge, to file a formal complaint at Kotwali Nagar.
Subsequently, a case has been registered against the operator of the Urban Pahadi social media account under crime number 221/24. The charges invoked include sections 66C and 66D of the Information Technology Act, as well as sections 153A, 171F, 469, 505, and 505(2) of the Indian Penal Code. These charges relate to identity theft, impersonation, promoting enmity between groups, and disrupting electoral processes.
Earlier, Delhi Police expressed dissatisfaction with Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's response regarding the fake video case involving Amit Shah.
On May 2, CM Telangana, through his counsel Advocate Soumya Gupta, filed a reply in response to a notice under CrPC 91. Gupta stated that they provided information about the Twitter handle managed by the Chief Minister, clarifying that the video in question was neither tweeted nor retweeted by him.
"We stated that it was not his account and the Twitter handle he operates has been provided to them," Gupta mentioned.
Currently, the CM's lawyer is at the Delhi Police IFSO Unit. Another notice may be issued to the CM soon. If the police remain unsatisfied with Revanth Reddy's responses in the future, they will take strict action.
According to sources within the Delhi Police, the IFSO unit team is actively conducting a technical investigation into the matter. Their primary objective is to identify the individual responsible for editing and disseminating the viral video featuring Amit Shah. Initial investigations have uncovered some leads regarding the origins of the video's dissemination, but efforts to follow up on these leads are ongoing.
Additionally, the Delhi Police have been receiving responses from several individuals who were issued notices in connection with the case. Approximately 20 to 25 individuals were sent notices, and the police are currently reviewing their responses as part of the ongoing investigation.
Sources further indicate that a Delhi Police team is presently stationed in Telangana, awaiting instructions from the national capital before taking further action in the case.
