In a setback for the ruling BJP, it lost the states of Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan to the Congress as the results of the assembly elections came in. In Madhya Pradesh, with Shivraj Singh Chauhan seeking a record 4th term for BJP is in a fight to the finish with the Congress. At the time of writing this report, the BJP and Congress are neck and neck with several rounds of votes left to be counted.
In Telangana, the TRS got a huge mandate winning 88 out of the 119 seats. It was a one horse race where even the alliance of Congress and TDP did not work on the ground. Chhattisgarh was the biggest shock for the BJP. Where many pollsters called it as a close contest, the Congress won a huge majority with getting 68 seats out of the 90 seats on offer. In the North Eastern state of Mizoram, the Mizo National Front made a comeback after 10 years with a simple majority winning 26 seats seat out of the 40 seats in the House and defeating the Congress.
The BJP got one seat each in Telangana (where it hoped to do a lot better) and one seat in Mizoram. The significance of these elections are that BJP won 62 out of the 65 seats in the three heartland states. Can they retain most of these or if the results hold will it backfire. These are some important questions that will be answered in the days to come.
This is how the numbers look:
Chhattisgarh
Rajasthan
Madhya Pradesh
Telangana
Mizoram
