Defense Minister Rajnath Singh referred to Siachen as the epitome of bravery and valor, emphasising its importance as a symbol of India's sovereignty and resilience. He visited the Siachen base camp, recognised as the highest battlefield globally, to evaluate the nation's military preparedness in the area.
Speaking to Indian Army troops stationed at the base camp, Rajnath Singh underscored the significance of Siachen, stating, "Siachen is not just any land; it symbolises our nation's sovereignty and resilience. It embodies our national resolve. While Delhi serves as our political capital, Mumbai as our economic hub, and Bengaluru as our technological centre, Siachen stands as the capital of valour and courage."
Rajnath Singh's trip to Siachen occurred just over a week following the Indian Army's commemoration of the 40th anniversary of its deployment in the strategically crucial region. Accompanied by Army Chief General Manoj Pande, the defense minister assessed the overall security situation in the area, as reported by officials.
The Siachen glacier, located at approximately 20,000 feet in the Karakoram range, holds the distinction of being the highest militarized zone worldwide, where soldiers grapple with frostbite and intense winds.
In April 1984, as part of 'Operation Meghdoot', the Indian Army took full control of the Siachen Glacier. Over recent years, the Indian Army has reinforced its presence in the Siachen region.
In January of the previous year, Captain Shiva Chauhan, hailing from the Army’s Corps of Engineers, was deployed at a frontline post in the Siachen Glacier, marking a historic milestone as the first operational deployment of a woman Army officer at this pivotal battlefield.
Recently an Army official highlighted, "The Indian Army's control over the Siachen Glacier is not just a tale of unmatched courage and resolve, but also a remarkable narrative of technological advancements and logistical enhancements. These developments have transformed the Siachen Glacier from one of the most challenging terrains into a symbol of unwavering spirit and innovation."
