A senior BSF official stated that an intruder killed along the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district may have been dispatched to conduct reconnaissance of the area and assess troops' alertness for a potential infiltration attempt. Border Security Force (BSF) personnel thwarted the infiltration bid at Samba's Regal post along the IB, resulting in the intruder's death. The body of the intruder was recovered from the site.
BSF Inspector General (IG) D K Boora, speaking during a visit to a forward post, informed reporters that troops observed movement from across the border around 8:15 pm on Wednesday and closely monitored it.
The intruder initially approached the border and then crossed the International Border. Despite multiple challenges by the troops, the intruder continued to advance aggressively, prompting the troops to open fire.
Boora suggested that the intruder's mission may have been reconnaissance of the area and assessment of border security. He noted a gap in the embankment near the incident site and a closed gate, through which the intruder attempted to breach the border.
The officer also expressed suspicion that the intruder could have been part of an infiltration plan, with the possibility of being followed by more individuals from across the border. He emphasised the tactics commonly employed at the border to probe vulnerabilities and facilitate infiltration.
The IG praised the troops for neutralizing the intruder, stating, "It is our duty to maintain vigilance, and such actions also serve to demoralize the enemy."
In response to concerns raised by the police regarding two groups of terrorists allegedly hiding in the Basantgarh hills after infiltrating from across the border, the officer commented, "I can only address this specific incident. Basantgarh falls outside our operational jurisdiction and is quite distant. Police are conducting an investigation, and we await the outcome."
When asked about potential infiltration attempts along the IB, he dismissed any such incidents, stating, "We have received no reports of infiltration attempts along the International Border."
