The BJP announced the appointment of senior advocate Ujjwal Nikam as the candidate for Mumbai North Central, replacing sitting MP Poonam Mahajan. Nikam, a senior public prosecutor, has served as the government prosecutor in several high-profile cases, including the 26/11 Mumbai attack and the murder case of BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, who is the father of Poonam Mahajan.
Padma Shri awardee Ujjwal Nikam will contest against Congress's Varsha Gaikwad, a former state minister, in the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for May 20.
Nikam's legal career includes involvement in several other high-profile cases, such as the Gulshan Kumar murder case, the 2013 Mumbai gang rape case, and the 2016 Kopardi rape and murder case, among others.
Poonam Mahajan secured victories in the constituency twice, first in 2014 and then in 2019. Party leaders have indicated that she was replaced due to receiving unfavourable feedback from the organisation.
Mumbai comprises six constituencies, divided into two sections: city and suburban. Mumbai South and Mumbai South Central are part of the city division, while Mumbai North Central, Mumbai North East, Mumbai North West, and Mumbai North are part of the suburban division.
As Mumbai gears up for the upcoming elections, anticipation builds among residents and candidates alike. With voting scheduled for May 20 and the nomination filing period underway until May 3, political activities are set to intensify in the city. As the electoral process unfolds, all eyes will be on Mumbai, a pivotal region in the political landscape of India.
