Organisations across Bangladesh held peaceful protests condemning the attack on the Hindu community in the country. A protest march was held in Chittagong against the attack on the Hindu community and the ongoing killing of Hindu teachers and rape of Hindu women in Bangladesh, reported local media.
Taking to Twitter, Hindu Sangbad, local media said, “Demonstrations by various Hindu organizations in Shahbagh and across the country were also held peacefully in protest against the barbaric radical Jihadi attack on Hindus in Narail Sahapara.”
In a video shared by the news agency, the Hindus were seen demanding justice for the victims of the Narail attack. They were seen marching peacefully with torches and banners and raising slogans in unison.
Earlier, Bangladesh National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) condemned the communal act and said that violence in a “secular country” is not acceptable under any circumstances.
In its order, the commission directed the Home Ministry to probe whether there was negligence in preventing the situation of unwanted attack and whether the police played a proper role in controlling the situation, as per media reports.
The human rights body’s remarks come after reports of Hindu minorities being attacked in Bangladesh came to light amid rumours of alleged Facebook posts slandering Islam.
Despite this, none of the culprits involved in the Narail attack was arrested. “The state is responsible for failing to stop this growing communal mindset in the society. When perpetrators go unpunished despite attacking the Hindu community time and again, it only encourages the fundamentalists,” read a report in The Daily Star.
On July 15, the homes of the Hindu minorities were set on fire in the Sahapara area of Lohagara, Narail. The mobs went on a rampage after Friday prayers, saying that an 18-year-old man from the neighbourhood hurt their religious feelings on Facebook. The mob vandalised a temple, a grocery store and several houses belonging to members of the Hindu community.
