Ashoka University promises action after casteist slogans raised on campus

In response to videos circulating on social media showing Ashoka University students in Haryana's Sonipat chanting casteist slogans and calling for a caste census, the university has expressed its condemnation of any expressions of hatred aimed at individuals or groups. It emphasised that all necessary steps would be taken to maintain peace and harmony on campus.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the university emphasized that actions creating an "intimidating" and "hostile" atmosphere for individuals or groups were deemed serious offenses.
One of the videos that circulated widely on social media depicted students marching within the university premises and chanting slogans targeting Brahmins and Baniyas.
In a separate video, students were heard chanting phrases such as 'Inquilab zindabad' (Long live the revolution), 'tanashahi band karo, admin thodi sharam karo' (Stop dictatorship, administration, have some shame), 'we want caste census', and 'we want reservation'.
"Ashoka University attaches great value to freedom of expression and vigorous debate, but it also attaches great importance to mutual respect. The university deplores expressions of hatred directed against any individual or group," the university said in a statement.
The university emphasised that its guidelines regarding the protection of freedom of expression clearly state that such freedom is not without limits and requires respect for the rights and sensitivities of others. It emphasised the importance of maintaining the community spirit at Ashoka.
Actions that create an atmosphere of intimidation, threat, or hostility towards individuals or groups are considered serious offenses and are subject to the university's disciplinary procedures. The university reiterated its commitment to taking all necessary measures to uphold peace and harmony on campus.
