At least 181 academics, comprising former and current vice-chancellors, have penned an open letter to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of disseminating falsehoods and tarnishing the reputation of the Office of the Vice Chancellors concerning the appointment procedures for university heads. They have called for legal action against Gandhi.
The academics assert that Gandhi made allegations suggesting that vice-chancellors are appointed based on connections rather than qualifications, insinuating a lack of transparency in the selection process. However, the signatories vehemently refute these claims, asserting that the process of selecting VCs is rigorous, transparent, and grounded in principles of meritocracy, scholarly distinction, and integrity.
The signatories to the letter include Jawaharlal Nehru University Vice Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, Delhi University VC Yogesh Singh, and AICTE Chairman T G Sitharam.
Academics asserted that the selection of university leaders revolves around appointing individuals with strong academic and administrative capabilities to enhance and advance the institutions. While they did not directly refute Rahul Gandhi's assertions, he has previously insinuated that affiliations with organisations like the RSS influence academic appointments.
Among the signatories to the letter are Vinay Pathak, Vice Chancellor of CSJM University in Kanpur; Bhagwati Prakash Sharma, Chancellor of Pacific University in Udaipur; N C Gautam, former Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya in Chitrakoot; Alok Chakkarval, Vice Chancellor of Guru Ghasidas Central University in Bilaspur; and Vinay Kapoor, former Vice Chancellor of BR Ambedkar National Law University in Sonipat.
The signatories asserted that universities in India have experienced significant advancements, evident in their rise in global rankings, notable accreditations, new research breakthroughs, curriculum updates bridging the gap between industry and academia, and improved job placement opportunities. They believe these successes demonstrate their commitment to being exceptionally proficient at teaching and making a positive impact on society.
“The array of academic disciplines and professional experiences represented amongst us stands as evidence of the unbiased and inclusive nature of the selection procedure,” they said. It reflects their dedication to fostering an atmosphere that values and promotes diversity, encourages independent thinking, and supports scholastic achievement.
The academics emphasised in their letter that Rahul Gandhi has resorted to falsehood and has defamed the Office of the Vice Chancellors at large with the intent to derive political mileage. They added that appropriate action should be taken against him forthwith in accordance with the law.
Furthermore, they stated that as guardians of knowledge and overseers of academic institutions, they are firmly dedicated to upholding the highest standards of governance integrity, ethical conduct, and institutional integrity.
They urged everyone to carefully differentiate between what is true and what is not, to avoid spreading baseless rumours. They called for discussions that are well-informed, constructive, and aligned with their common objective of establishing a dynamic and inclusive educational atmosphere.
