Dr. T.R.N Rao
T. R. N. Rao (S'62-M'67-SM'78-F'84) received the B.Sc. degree in physics from Andra University and D.I.I.Sc. degree from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1961 and 1964 respectively.
Dr. Rao taught at the University of Maryland, College Park, during the years 1967-1975 and at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX, from 1975 to 1980. He joined as Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1980 and presently holds the Z. L. Loflin Chair of Computer Science at its Center for Advanced Computer Studies. He was a Fulbright Fellow in India during 1986-1987 and 1993-1994.
Dr. Rao presently serves as an Editor of IEEE Transactions On Computers. He was Chairman of the ACM Lectureship Committee from 1991--1992 and received the ACM Distinguished Lecturer of the Year Award for 1992. He was named a Fellow of the IEEE in 1984 for his "Contributions to Arithmetic Coding, Unidirectional Codes and Fault-Tolerant Computing".
Dr. Rao has served as Program Chairman and General Chairman in various international conferences over the years and has nearly 100 papers published in the areas of computer arithmetic, coding theory, fault-tolerant computing, and cryptology in journals and proceedings of international conferences. He is also the author of Error Coding for Arithmetic Processor (Academic Press, 1974) and a coauthor of Error Control Codes for Computer Systems (Prentice Hall, 1988). He also edited (jointly with H. F. Mattson and T. Mora) Applied Algebra, Algebraic Algorithm and Error-Correcting Code - Lecture Notes in
Computer Science Volume 539 (Springer-Verlag, 1991). Dr. Rao has also received
funding for over 15 research grants from Federal agencies, among them NASA, NSF, ONR, and NSA.
