As the US presidential race enters into its final stretch, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump faced off in the first presidential debate today. The debate saw the usual positioning of the two candidates and in the initial stages, Donald Trump seemed to have the edge over Hillary Clinton especially on the economic issues. But as the debate went on, Trump sounded anxious and faltered on a couple of key questions. On the question over the birth certificate of President Barack Obama (known as the birther controversy), Donald Trump sounded unconvincing.
Hillary Clinton’s Achilles heel was widely believed to be foreign policy, especially considering her position on Benghazi. She still managed to edge ahead of Donald Trump in that aspect. She made a weak beginning on the economic policy front but managed to triumph Trump on the race issue and the social debate. This debate was not dominated by one side, but Hillary may have nudged ahead in the latter stages. This may boost her polling numbers to some extent, but how the next 2 presidential and 1 vice presidential debates pan out will hold the key for either candidate to win the elections in November.
