In 1997, on the brink of a financial ruin, businessman Trump had declared; Anyone who thinks my story is anywhere near over is sadly mistaken. Two decades later, on a cold wintry January morning as people across the world watched, Mr. Trump has once again likely reaffirmed his statement. Today, on Jan 20th, President Elect Donald Trump officially takes charge as the 45th President of United States of America from the outgoing President Obama.
Depending upon one’s political proclivity, for Americans it is either a day of rejoicing or remorse. An estimated million-people descended upon Washington D.C. to attend the inauguration to witness Donald Trump being appointed the new president by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. Three other Presidents; Carter, Clinton and Bush were in attendance along with the outgoing President Obama.
President Trump seemed very confident and optimistic when he was administered the oath. In his inaugural address to the American people, the President emphasised on his key election campaign theme of “Make America Great Again”. The major portion of his speech centred on people, and how his government will transfer power to the people. He reiterated that he was here because of the people who believed in the movement and the conviction that a nation exists to serve its citizens.
There have been a lot of apprehensions about expectations from the new government not only in America but across the world. Sporadic protests in parts of America, UK, Germany, Mexico and Arab world etc. have been reported on Social Media. Whatever the aspersions, made in the past or continue to remain, Trump in his inaugural speech chose to be direct. He has assured to deliver on his promises of job, safety, security and healthcare. He also spoke of eliminating Islamic terrorism which has remained one of his central issues to tackle. Regarding discrimination for which he has been accused widely he summed it up simply as; When you open your hearts for patriotism there is no room for prejudice.
For many who wait and watch on how the Trump administration will unfold in the many months to come, his trial begins today. He has the next four years to act and keep his word true. As an outsider to the workings of the government and the institutions that brook it, he will be criticised for his every step. His threat to unravel most of his predecessor’s notable resolutions will be strongly resisted by his opponents. Refraining from being judgemental, the next four years will be as unpredictable as the man at the helm. It will also do him good to remember his own words; In the end, you're measured not by how much you undertake but by what you finally accomplish”.
Good luck America.
