Wailing and Waiting Windows
Twenty six winters ago, in the middle of the dark night, we were woken up to threats emanating from loudspeakers mounted atop mosques all over the Kashmir valley. “Raliv, Galiv Ya Chaliv!! Convert, Die or Flee!” Those were the three choices given to us by Islamic terrorists. We had no choice but to flee. Overnight, one of the largest mass exoduses in last fifty years started and we became homeless refugees in our own country. While we were getting ethnically cleansed from our homeland, the world remained mute. And as we enter our 27th year of exile, the world is still mute. We are still longing and fighting for our homes and hearths.
In the summer of 2005, after 16 long years, I travelled back to Kashmir to see if my homeland weeps for me as I weep for her. Expectedly, she was!!! Her grief-stricken soul was crying through all the visible wounds and scars. Since then I have gone back to Kashmir several times and captured her pains and longing for her original inhabitants – Kashmiri Hindus. Here are some wailing windows waiting for us so that we could bring them back to life….sooner than later….
