Recently Zaira Wasim, the 16-year-old Kashmiri actor who played the character of Geeta Phogat in Aamir Khan’s DANGAL, was vehemently abused on Facebook by the fundamentalist groups for acting in a “polluted” medium and acting against “religious norms” and bringing shame and disgrace to Islam. Here we reproduce some of the shameful comments that she received.
Zaira, who shot to fame post the success of ‘Dangal’, recently met the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti. During the meet, the powerhouse performer spoke her mind on the importance of educating the girl child and women’s safety apart from other things.
She was again being targeted for meeting the J&K CM, especially when Mehbooba Mufti described her as a “Kashmiri role model”.
The 16-year-old girl, who was threatened and abused was finally forced to apologize publicly and wrote two Facebook posts explaining her position on Monday. She quickly went on to deleting these posts, but screen shots went viral on social media. Here we reproduce Zaira’s post that she called ‘open confession/apology’ :
The reactions on Social Media started pouring in. Sunanda Vashisht, who also hails from Kashmir and often writes about tragedy of Kashmir, was pained to hear this and expressed her anguish in following tweets.
There were many more on Social Media asking the Bollywood to assert themselves and stand in support of the minor girl from their fraternity. Some also tagged some vocal celebrities while making their request to condemn this targeted abuse by fundamentalist Islamists. That was followed by this:
No. The result was not zero. Ace actor Anupam Kher responded with this tweet.
Anurag Kashyap also responded. Not by condemning the abusers, but condemning the Social Media user who tagged him requesting a condemnation. With his unique sense of idiocy Anurag Kashyap seems to have embarrassed himself & Bollywood once again.
Before Social Media could recover from the shock of Anurag Kashyap’s response, The Aamir Khan himself posted a ‘public statement’ appealing people to leave her alone and respect the fact that she is just 16-year-old. Here we reproduce that statement :
Any sane mind would in such situation think that Zaira needed support of the masses against the fringe extremists of Kashmir. Instead of asking people to speak up and stand by her side, why is Aamir asking people to leave Zaira alone? The following tweet speaks my mind too.
The Social Media responded in different moods. Some came with satire:
Some were angry, and naturally so:
Few rubbed the Right Wingers too… but without leaving logic at home.
Some came with clarifying the response:
Needless to say, Aamir’s response was lame, full of hypocrisy and opportunistic and seems to be issued under public pressure. He tried to garner public sympathy at the cost of mental torture of a young, vibrant Muslim girl pursuing her dreams from Kashmir. Asking people to leave Zaira alone while she is being abused and intimidated in her state, is nothing but cowardice.
I am not at all surprised why there was NOT a single word condemning the fundamentalists who threatened the minor girl to the level that she was forced to publicly apologize for her incredible talent and choice of career. This foolish bravado of Aamir proves once again that be it acting or hypocrisy, he is second to none.
