As the latest indication of the two allies' growing cooperation in the semiconductor industry, the United States and Japan said on Friday that they will intensify their collaboration in the research and development of advanced chips and other technologies.
The move, which also includes collaboration on quantum computing and discussions on artificial intelligence, comes as both Washington and Tokyo reduce exposure to China and work together to expand chip manufacturing and secure advanced components essential for economic growth.
The United States, Japan, and other members of the Group of Seven (G7) advanced nations last week agreed to "de-risk" but not decouple from China, underscoring the deep concern among advanced democracies about China's rising technological might and its lock hold on technology supply chains.
In a joint statement, Washington and Tokyo agreed to increase cooperation between their research and development hubs, as they map out future technology collaboration.
The declaration was made following a meeting between American Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo and Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Yasutoshi Nishimura in Detroit.
The two nations decided to cooperate "to identify and resolve geographic concentrations of production undermining semiconductor supply chain resilience". They also vowed to work with rising and developing nations to strengthen supply chains.
Japan has established a new chip manufacturer, Rapidus, which is collaborating with International Business Machines Corp (IBM) (IBM.N) to produce advanced logic semiconductors, and is providing financial aid to American memory maker Micron Technology Inc (MU.O) so that it may increase production there.
Along with the Netherlands, Japan has also agreed to adhere to U.S. export restrictions that will restrict the supply of some chipmaking equipment to China.
