The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reportedly suspended a major deal with France for the purchase of fighter jets following the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov. Reports from Iran's Mehr News agency, quoting the Avia.pro website, indicate that the UAE has taken this action in response to Durov's recent arrest in France over the weekend.
Durov, the founder of the popular messaging app Telegram, was detained as part of an ongoing investigation into the platform's alleged role in facilitating illicit activities. Authorities have accused Telegram of failing to curb illegal actions on its platform, including drug trafficking and the distribution of child pornography. Durov, who was born in Russia, holds dual citizenship in both France and the UAE. It remains unclear whether he still retains his Russian citizenship or has renounced it.
The arrest has reportedly angered the UAE, leading to the suspension of a significant military deal with France. The suspended deal involves the UAE's planned purchase of 80 Rafale fighter jets from French aerospace giant Dassault. This agreement, which was considered a major advancement in defence cooperation between the two nations, is now uncertain due to the diplomatic fallout from Durov’s arrest.
The Avia.pro website also suggested that the UAE might consider a complete halt to its military and technical cooperation with France if the situation surrounding Durov’s arrest escalates. The UAE government has already sought consular access to Durov, showing its concern over the matter.
As of Tuesday, Durov had not been formally charged. According to reports from the Associated Press, he may remain in custody until Wednesday. At that time, a judge will decide whether to press charges against him or order his release. The ongoing investigation and the UAE's response could have significant implications for international relations and business agreements between the UAE and France.
