A day after pro-Khalistanis attacked the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton, thousands of Canadian Hindus demonstrated in solidarity outside the building. The Coalition of Hindus in North America (CoHNA) organised the march on Monday evening.
The Hindu advocacy group posted on X, stating, "Over a thousand Canadian Hindus have gathered in Brampton to protest against the increasingly brazen attacks on Hindu Temples. Yesterday, during the sacred Diwali weekend, Canadian Hindu temples, coast to coast, came under attack. We ask Canada to stop this Hinduphobia now." Along with the flags of India and Canada, the participants also carried banners that read "Jai Shri Ram." The demonstrators also chanted anti-Khalistan slogans.
One participant urged Canada to treat Hindus fairly, while another stated that Hindus in Canada have faced persistent discrimination for roughly 20 years. A participant who spoke to ANI said, "Hindu Canadians are very loyal to Canada. What is happening to Hindu Canadians is not right. The time has come for all politicians to know that what is happening to Hindu Canadians is wrong. We want Canada to treat Hindus well. We want India and Canada relations to strengthen. We are against those who do this."
Another participant stated that the purpose of Monday night's event in Brampton was "to protest what happened to us." He said, "It has been happening to us for about 20 years. We have been consistently discriminated against. We have gathered here to showcase how we were discriminated against by the police yesterday. Despite that, all Hindus have gathered and protested here peacefully."
On Sunday, there were clashes between people carrying Khalistani flags and devotees at the Hindu Sabha temple. Unverified videos circulating on social media showed the protesters with pro-Khalistan banners and flags. Three people have already been taken into custody by the police in relation to the incident. According to the Peel Regional Police, the individuals were taken into custody for assaulting a police officer and assault with a weapon.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on the Ottawa government to "ensure justice and uphold the rule of law" after denouncing the attack on Monday. "I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. Equally, appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence will never weaken India's resolve. We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law," PM Modi wrote on X.
This was his first statement about the ongoing violence caused by pro-Khalistani supporters in Canada. The attack was also condemned by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who emphasised that every Canadian has the basic right to practice their religion safely and freely. However, Trudeau faced criticism for not directly condemning "Khalistani extremism," with some accusing him of allowing it to continue unchecked. The incident at the temple occurred during such a crucial time when the relations between the two countries had gone sour.
In September 2023, relations between India and Canada worsened after Prime Minister Trudeau stated that Canadian intelligence had 'credible allegations' linking Indian government agents to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a known Khalistani supporter. India considers Nijjar a terrorist, associating him with several violent acts, including a 2007 bombing at a Punjab movie theatre and the 2009 assassination of Sikh leader Rulda Singh. Despite these accusations, Canada did not act against Nijjar or other pro-Khalistan activists, who have continued to hold events, such as Khalistan referendums, pushing for a separate Sikh state.
