As reported by The Global Times, on Thursday, Shanghai, China’s largest city and global financial center, is set to extend a new driverless and longest metro line. With the addition of metro lines, Shanghai’s metro network will have a total length of 831 km, making it the world’s longest.
In addition to having the largest metro network in the world, the city will also have two fully driverless metro lines, making five automated metro lines. There will be 167 km of fully automatic lines in the city, contributing to the metro network’s overall length.
“The north section of Shanghai’s Line 18 phase 1, which will mainly cover the city’s northern Pudong New Area and northeastern Yangpu District, is to debut on Thursday as well,” The Global Times quoted the metro official as saying, “its south section opened last December,” added the official.
Now that the city has 20 metro lines, there will be 508 stations. Metro officials report that the new line will link a few of Shanghai’s most popular districts, including Jiading, Putuo, Jing’an, Huangpu, and Pudong New.
Besides providing convenient access to some of the city’s most important landmarks and tourist attractions, the new metro station will provide convenient access to downtown Shanghai’s most renowned tourist attractions, including Jing’an Temple and Lujiazui.
A Shanghai resident told the Global Times that he has been looking forward to metro Line 14 for quite some time. “I have been eagerly awaiting Metro Line 14 for the longest time.
The forthcoming metro line will curtail my commute time from nearly one hour to some 20 minutes,” added the resident. Moreover, the Communist government of China has accelerated its infrastructure expansion in strategic as well as important areas of the country.
