On Tuesday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested a software engineer from Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh in connection to the Rameshwaram Cafe blast case in Bengaluru, according to sources familiar with the matter.
NIA investigators carried out searches at the home of retired headmaster Abdul near Venugopala Swamy temple in Rayadurgam town during the early hours of Tuesday. They detained Abdul's elder son, Mohammad Suhail, from the residence and took him to the local police station. While one team interrogated him at the police station, another team searched the residence and allegedly confiscated a computer, hard disk, mobile phone, and certain documents. Later, Suhail was transferred to Bengaluru.
“The NIA authorities conducted the raid after conducting recce in the area for the last three days. They took Gaffoor’s son Sohail into custody for questioning,” a police official from Anantapur privy to the matter said, adding that the local police had provided logistic support to the NIA authorities in their operation.
The young man, in his early thirties, is employed at a software company in Bengaluru, where his elder brother also works. During the NIA investigation into the Rameshwaram café blast, authorities reportedly found that Sohail had received a substantial sum of money in his bank account.
Sources said Suhail was staying at a PG accommodation in which one of the accused in the Rameshwaram Cafe blast case was also residing.
After the blast, Suhail took work from home and resided at Rayadurgam. Sources said Suhail and the blast accused had a chat over WhatsApp after the blast also. The blast took place on March 1 injuring several persons.
The NIA on April 12 arrested two accused Mussavir Hussain Shazib and Abdul Matheen Ahmed Taahaa from West Bengal.
Sohail was later taken to Rayadurgam police station amidst tight security and after initial questioning, he was shifted to Bengaluru. “The NIA authorities informed Gaffoor and the family in writing about the arrest of Sohail,” the police official quoted above said.
