According to reports, a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) swayamsevak named Shankar Prasad Dey was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in the Dhanbad district of Jharkhand on July 11. The victim, identified as Shankar Prasad Dey, held important positions within the organization, serving as the district convener of Vanvasi Kalyan Kendra and Jila Sampark Pramukh.
The incident took place near Duma village, falling under the jurisdiction of the Tundi police station. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter to identify the attackers. Parimal Dey, nephew of Shankar Prasad Dey, confirmed the tragic incident, stating that his uncle had been shot multiple times, approximately six to seven shots.
Further details regarding the motive behind the attack or the identity of the assailants are yet to be ascertained. The police are actively working on the case to gather relevant information and bring the culprits to justice.
According to the Station House Officer, a First Information Report (FIR) bearing number 41/2023 has been filed in connection with the case. The police successfully apprehended three individuals suspected of involvement; however, the officer declined to disclose their identities at this time.
The Station House Officer further informed that all the accused individuals have been charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including section 302 for murder, section 120-B for criminal conspiracy, and section 77 of the Arms Act. The motive behind the killing is yet to be determined, as per the police.
It is noteworthy that Shankar Prasad Dey was not only associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) but also held membership in the Gram Raksha Dal, a local vigilante group operating in areas with porous borders. These groups are formed under the supervision of the local administration. Prasad resided in the Purvi Tundi region, which has experienced a significant issue of cow smuggling. He was actively engaged in combating these smugglers, advocating against their illegal activities.
As per sources, Shankar Prasad Dey and his team successfully apprehended cow smugglers in the area just last week. Dey, a dedicated swayamsevak actively serving India, had been working tirelessly. While the administration is allegedly attempting to downplay the incident as a land dispute, there are suspicions of a possible communal angle.
It is believed that Dey may have encountered influential figures within the smuggling network, leading to the attack. In response to his tragic death, local Hindu activists, including numerous swayamsevaks, staged a road blockade, demanding swift action against the culprits. The police have assured the protestors of timely action.
The BJP state president Babulal Marandi sharing the news of the demise of RSS swayamsevak wrote, “Unbridled criminals shot dead Shankar Prasad, an activist of @RSSorg late Tuesday night at Tundi in Dhanbad district. Crime is at its peak in Jharkhand. Attacks on Hindu institutions and leaders are on the rise. Due to the politics of appeasement, the Soren government hesitates to take any concrete action. Chief Minister @HemantSorenJMM Sir, the entire state is suffering due to your silence and inaction. At least on the subject of law and order, follow your Rajdharma. My deepest condolences to the family members of the late Shankar ji. May God give him a place at his feet. Om Shanti.”
It has been reported that Sreenivasan, aged 45, was brutally hacked to death on April 16, following the murder of a local PFI terrorist, A Subair.
