According to a report in the Times of India, Chinese automotive giant Build Your Dreams (BYD) is currently facing obstacles in its plan to enter the Indian market due to security concerns. BYD had reportedly submitted a $1 billion investment proposal in collaboration with Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructures (MEIL) to manufacture electric cars and batteries in India.
The Times of India report suggests that the discomfort expressed by the Indian ministries of home affairs and external affairs is the primary reason behind the hindrance to BYD's entry into the market. The Indian government's stance is apparently aimed at restricting the participation of foreign entities, particularly those from across the border, due to security concerns surrounding certain players.
The report further elaborates on the apprehension that many joint ventures involving Chinese companies tend to heavily favour and be controlled by a foreign partner, leaving the Indian companies with little to no decision-making power. Similar concerns have reportedly emerged in the case of BYD, as the Chinese electric company seeks to expand aggressively in India.
According to the report, BYD and Megha Engineering have submitted a joint proposal to Indian regulators for the establishment of an electric vehicle joint venture. BYD intends to manufacture a comprehensive range of EVs under its own brand in India, encompassing hatchbacks to luxury models.
The Indian government has displayed caution regarding foreign direct investment (FDI) proposals originating from China, especially following the military clash in the Galwan Valley between the two countries. In 2020, the Indian government implemented stricter regulations to prevent opportunistic takeovers of struggling Indian companies by Chinese firms during the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
India's overall relations with China, including business ties, have experienced a decline in recent years due to border tensions and allegations against Chinese entities for unauthorized access to personal data from Indian operations.
