What releases maximum harmful particulates into the air:
a) Bursting crackers
b) Burning garbage
c) Smoking
d) Combustion in wood & kerosene stoves
Answer: b) Burning garbage. If you notice this happening in your area, talk to your corporator to put an end to it.
What causes maximum noise pollution?
a) Small crackers burst in open fields
b) Bursting large crackers in enclosed spaces to celebrate political or cricket wins or weddings or birthdays.
c) Neighbour honking to ask his mum to hurry up so they can go shopping
d) Borewell digging
e) Truck unloading materials for your house renovation
f) Generator running for last 6 hours due to long summer power cut
Answer: b). Don't burst crackers in places with buildings all round. The echo effect tends to increase the intensity of sound.
But all the others except a) are pretty close too. Low intensity noises for prolonged durations are more damaging than bursts of loud sound for few milliseconds.
How to prevent cracker noise & smoke from entering your house?
a) Close all doors and windows
b) Put up thick or layers of curtains on all the windows & hang up long strings of marigold to form curtains for your doors
c) Shout at the kids to take their noise elsewhere
d) Rant on facebook
Answer: a) and b) both. Curtains form a very effective barrier as do flower-curtains. If possible, shelter in a part of the house that is surrounded by trees/shrubs or potted plants as these will deflect a part of the noise. Note that c) and d) may make you feel better, but your tirade will probably have no effect other than draining your energy.
How to help your pet dog stay calm during Deepavali?
a) Leave town with the dog and take a holiday.
b) Cancel all your drinking parties and ensure the calmest member of the family hangs out with your dog in a relatively quiet part of your house without too many windows.
c) Jump suddenly and scream every time a cracker bursts, freaking out not just your dog but also any relatives with heart trouble.
Answer: b) if a) is not possible. Dogs take their cues from their humans. So if you have a freaked out dog, figure out which of their human friends is the cause. If you stay calm, your dog will learn from you. Also, get the dog's ears tested. Sound sensitivity is usually due to an infection.
How to help street dogs stay calm when crackers are being burst?
Street dogs are usually not affected by crackers. If you see a scared street dog near you, consider that it might be scared of you. If it is a dog who looks up to you, see question about pet dogs. It is most probably still your fault.
