In a keenly contested and closely watched Maharashtra civic polls, Bharatiya Janata Party continued its winning streak and made strong gains across Maharashtra. In a nail biting finale, BJP finished just 2 short of Shiv Sena’s 84 in Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or BMC. This is BJP’s finest performance in BMC elections. It had won 31 seats five years ago. This time Congress finished with 31 seats, its worst ever performance. NCP and MNS didn’t fare too well either with NCP winning seven and MNS winning six seats only.
BJP made significant gains across Maharashtra. They could wrest Pune Municipal Corporation and were a close second in Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. Shiv Sena retained Thane municipal corporation. BJP major gains came from Nagpur and Nashik also.
BJP’s biggest victory is in making significant inroads in what were NCP’s traditional strongholds in rural Maharashtra. BJP won eight out of ten major municipal corporation elections making it the biggest winner of the local body elections. Shiv Sena had hoped to win at least 100 seats in BMC but BJP was able to stop its erstwhile partner in its tracks and both finished very close to each other. The half way mark is 114 and soon alliances will be sought and it will remain to be seen how the new alliances will shape in considerably stronger BJP led Maharashtra.
The undisputed winner of today’s results was undoubtedly Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis who led from the front and fought elections on the plank of transparency and development.
One of the biggest takeaways from these results is that BJP has emerged stronger after Demonetization and appears to be unstoppable at the moment. Modi’s moment in the sun is here to stay for now.
This is a developing story. We will be bringing more reports as the story develops.
