Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath has announced that Allahabad, one of the holiest religious destinations of Hindus will be once again named Prayagraj. This decision was taken ahead of Ardh Kumbh Mela that will be held in January next year.
The city used to be known Prayag since time immemorial. 500 years ago. Ancient Hindu Scriptures have references to this city named Prayag. Mughal king Akbar had changed the name of Prayag to Illahabad in 1575. Consequently, it became Allahabad. Prayag is the confluence of three important rivers- Ganga, Jamuna and Saraswati. That is why the destination is also known as Triveni Sangam. Siddharth Nath Singh, Minister in UP government said the renaming was done under the insistence of people and saints of Allahabad. Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath had also put his might behind the name change.
One of the most important cities of Uttar Pradesh, Allahabad now known as Prayagraj is also the seat of the high court, state public service commission and a leading educational centre.
